Libyan War and Migrant Crisis

Libya
2016/2017

Is Libya a safe port? When in 2019 the about 90 migrants get on the Libyan Coast Guard boat that intercepted them on the Mediterranean sea, with orders to bring them back to Tripoli, the expression on their faces reveals the awareness of what awaits them once they are back: the prison described by many as a hell. As if that were not enough, a war has been fought for more than three months on the outskirts of Tripoli that according to the World Health Organization has already caused over a thousand victims. The recent bombing of the Tajoura Detention Center, which killed 53 people and wounded 130, confirmed the fears of the international community that even migrants could become victims of the conflict. In a country where, following the fall of Gaddafi, various local militias compete for power, today many Libyans prefer the return of a strong man able to guarantee the stability, even though often in Tripoli they cannot express it openly.
