In the early morning of 24 February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a 'special military operation', initiating an invasion of Ukraine. The first bombings that hit major Ukrainian cities marked the beginning of a war that instead of subsiding, is still growing in intensity, with serious consequences for the civilian population. According to the United Nations’ refugee agency, more than five million people have fled Ukraine since the beginning of the war, and about 7000 civilians have been killed. Also military losses have been heavy, among them thousands of Ukrainian civilians who voluntarily enlisted in the Territorial Defense Forces (TDF) to fight invading Russian troops. The photographs document the development of the conflict in Ukraine from its beginning to some of the key events, portraying its consequences on the civilians and the Ukrainian army.

04 - Druzhkivka. June 20, 2022 - A facility used by Ukrainian soldiers as a base in Druzhkivka, on fire after a rocket attack.


05 - Borodyanka. April 05, 2022 - A residential building destroyed by shelling in Borodyanka.
06 - Motyzhyn. April 04, 2022 - The dead body of Oleksandr Sukhenko found in a mass grave next to buildings housing Russian soldiers in a forest outside the village of Motyzhyn. According to Ukrainian officials and local residents Oleksandr, his father Igor and his mother Olga, village head of Motyzhyn, were abducted by Russian soldiers, then executed and buried, along with two other bodies in the same area, in a shallow pit in a forest.



07 - Mykolaivka village. June 16, 2022 - Elderly women sit on a bench outside a residential building in the village of Mykolaivka, to get some fresh air before returning to the basement.
08 - Donetsk Oblast. June 23, 2022 - Ukrainian servicemen stand on top of an armored vehicle on the road out form Lysychansk to Bakhmut, while fighting raged in the city of Sievierodonetsk.


09 - Moshchun. April 12, 2022 - A puppet made with Russian uniforms is hanged on a tree at the entrance of Moshchun, a town retaken by Ukrainian soldiers during Russian forces' attempt to reach Kyiv.
10 - Sulyhivka village.  September 17, 2022 - Ukrainian servicemen, members of the Skala battalion, injured by the activation of an anti-personnel mine on a field, leave the area of the accident. South of Sulyhivka village. In the accident two soldiers died.
11 - Sulyhivka village.  September 17, 2022 - Ukrainian servicemen evacuate Ivan Shpylyevoi, nom de guerre “Sadist" and member of the Skala battalion, injured by the activation of an anti-personnel mine, south of Sulyhivka village. "Sadist" suffered from internal bleeding and died about twenty minutes after the blast.
12 - Bakhmut. February 02, 2023 - A Norwegian paramedics injured by shelling while on his way to the scene of a previous explosion, runs to leave the area as more shelling continues to fall.
13 - Lysychansk. June 21, 2022 - Relatives and friends mourn the death of Nastia 13, killed by a mortar attack while she was riding her bike home, after working as a volunteer in the school of the city organizing food distribution.
14 - September 19, 2022 - Yevgeny Nuzhin, 55, a Russian war prisoner member of the Wagner group, sits in his cell in a basement of an undisclosed location controlled by a Ukrainian battalion named Skala, near Izyum. Yevgeny Nuzhin decided to join the Wagner group while serving his sentence for murder in a Russian prison. After this picture was taken, according to Ukrainian authorities, he was part of prisoners exchange. He was then accused by his own group of being a traitor after changing side in the Ukraine war and therefore executed. On 12 November 2022 a video titled "The hammer of revenge" was released showing an unidentified man smashing a sledgehammer into the side of Yevgeny's head and neck.
15 - Dnipro. May 11, 2023 - A Ukrainian serviceman Garpynuk Dmytro, lies in the operating room of Mechnikov Hospital in Dnipro, during an operation to remove shrapnel in his head.
16 - Kramatorsk. July 07, 2022 - The dead body of a man killed by missile strike that hit a residential area in Kramatorsk. At least one person has been killed and six injured.
17 - Donetsk Oblast. June 22, 2022 - A Ukrainian soldier sits inside a troop carrier full of soldiers on the way back from the frontline at Sievierodonetsk.
